Why the roofline and not somewhere else
Look at any house after dark and the outline you pick out first is the roof edge. It is the one line that runs the whole width of the house, and it has open sky behind it, which is why light on it reads from a distance. Light that line and the whole house resolves.Which is why almost every permanent lighting system starts at that line rather than anywhere else on the building. It is the highest impact run on the building, for what it costs to install.
What is up there
Roofline lighting is an aluminum channel matched to your trim holding individual LEDs, mounted along the edge and left in place year round. That channel is doing two things, carrying the LEDs and keeping the daytime look clean. Matched to the trim, it reads as part of the house at noon.
Where the run stops
The main roofline is the anchor, then the design decides what else is worth adding. Gables, dormers, porch edges, columns and second story lines all get considered, though a good plan leaves some of them dark. Outline everything and you end up with a shape and no depth, which is the most common way a roofline plan goes wrong.Look along a completed run from one end, because a line that stays true over that distance is the mark of a careful install.
Daylight is half the job
The hardware stays up, which makes daylight appearance part of what you are buying. That is why the color match matters more than it sounds. Tight to the line, color matched, wiring concealed: that is the whole standard.
How it gets used
Once the run is in, the rest is what you set it to. Plain white most nights, color when there is a reason, on a timer so nobody has to remember. The setting that gets the most hours is the warm white, which surprises people who bought it for the holidays.
Why quotes vary
Rooflines are not comparable by square footage. Linear feet is the obvious factor, though it is rarely what separates two quotes. Every corner is another cut, another fitting and another decision. Two stories is a different day than one.
Where it fastens
Homeowners expect it to hang off the gutter, because that is how seasonal strands work. A permanent channel does not work that way. That distinction matters since a gutter is not a permanent mounting point, and anything fastened to one inherits its problems.
