Not the same as permanent work
The distinction matters: permanent systems are infrastructure, event lighting is staging. Weddings, receptions, corporate evenings: set up for the date and removed after. That changes the whole approach, starting with the fact that there is no second chance at it.That single fact drives the rest of it. An installation is judged over years. An event gets

So the planning front loads, the what ifs get covered, and nothing important gets left to the day itself.
The date does not move
Permanent work has flexible scheduling. An event date is not adjustable. The lead time is not proportional to the size of the display. A small display still requires the same sequence as a big one.
Power is where outdoor events go wrong
The most common outdoor event problem is power, not aesthetics. Where the power comes from, how far it has to travel, and how the cable is managed are questions worth settling early. A beautiful plan with no way to power it is a drawing.Tell the lighting company about the band, the caterer and the photographer, since all of them want power and floor space too.
Planning for the day going wrong
An outdoor date is exposed. It is worth asking what happens if the forecast turns, even though nobody enjoys it. Having an answer already agreed means the day is manageable either way.
Priorities
At an outdoor event the light is doing two things: atmosphere and navigation. Atmosphere comes from the canopy and the feature areas. Function covers paths, level changes and exits, and it only gets noticed when it is missing. Both belong on the list. Only one of them ends up in the photographs.
Working with the site
If the event is not at your own house, the property has its own requirements. Access windows, load in times, attachment restrictions, and the strike deadline are all set by the venue, not by you. Getting those two parties connected up front prevents the usual scramble.
Scale
The instinct with an event is more. Dark surroundings make everything read brighter, so a plan that seems thin in daylight is usually right. The spaces that look best in photographs are almost always lit less than people expect, with warm light and real darkness between the lit areas. A designer who says you need less than you think is usually right.
